Last month was a busy month of anniversaries for us. Not only did Decipher celebrate its 18th birthday, but we were also celebrating Senior Quantity Surveyor Andy Walkden’s ten year anniversary.
To mark the occasion, we thought we would find out a little more about Andy’s career to date and what the future may hold…
Tell us a little about your training and background
I actually only started out in quantity surveying just over 10 years ago. Before that, I’d spent the majority of my career working in client management roles in the marketing industry. Having originally completed a degree in business studies upon completion of my A-levels, I went on to complete a post graduate diploma in quantity surveying when I made the decision to move into construction. I completed this on a distance learning basis with the University College of Estate Management. A very different experience from first time round, but this enabled me to complete my studies alongside working full time.
What is the most enjoyable part of your role?
It’s really the variety of roles. There’s a real diversity in the type of work we do for our clients. From preparing bills of quantities during the pre-construction stages to preparing final accounts and claims at the very end of projects. It means no two days are ever the same and gives you a really broad range of experience to call upon.
What is it about working for Decipher that has kept you here all these years?
Along with the diverse work, I would have to say the people. There are some great people here at Decipher and I guess it kind of it feels a bit like a family, where everyone works together as a team and supports one another.
What has been the highlight of your career?
Certainly one of my proudest moments was when I completed the construction of my first new build domestic property. It wasn’t long after starting with Decipher and I was responsible for the commercial management and running the entire project. It was hard work, but it was a real feeling of achievement to see the finished property constructed on time and to budget and the client was delighted with it.
What are your goals for the next ten years?
My main goals in the next ten years are to get myself RICS accredited and to go on and develop a senior management career with Decipher.
On behalf of all of us at Decipher we would like to thank Andy for all his hard work over the years. The nature of our business really means the people working in it can make or break it. Andy is a fantastic asset to our technical team and it has been a pleasure supporting him as he has developed his career with us.
